Clarinetist Sarah Koop McCoy is an active performer and educator in New York City, making regular appearances with The Chelsea Symphony, the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, Camerata Notturna, One World Symphony, the Alpha Omega Ensemble, and more - with recent performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The American Museum of Natural History, Symphony Space, Merkin Hall, and the DiMenna Center for Classical Music . Sarah has also appeared as a featured clarinetist on the Emmy Award-nominated series Mozart in the Jungle. An alumna from Ithaca College's School of Music and the Stony Brook University Graduate Program, Sarah has performed advanced solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire with the top musicians and conductors in the country.
An acclaimed soloist, Sarah won first prize in the Sewanee Summer Music Festival concerto competition with Alexander Manevich's Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, and has performed Aaron Copland's and Carl Nielsen's Concerto for Clarinet with The Chelsea Symphony. As a chamber musician, Sarah has worked closely with Simone Fontanelli, Gil Kalish, members of Windscape and the Emerson String Quartet. Committed to the development of new music, Sarah often premieres new works, and has worked hands-on in the compositional process with many up-and-coming prominent New York composers.
Equally passionate about education, Sarah maintains an expanding private clarinet studio on Long Island, and has served as a chamber music coach at Stony Brook University and the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. She has served on the faculty of the Long Island Conservatory, The Music Academy of Long Island, and Center Stage Music Studio, and was a member of In the Pocket NYC, a co-op of teaching musicians. Sarah played a key role in developing and running the ensemble program at the InterSchool Orchestras of NY, where she stays involved as a Youth Orchestra Consultant. Sarah volunteers at Therapeutic Riding programs, where she teaches children and young adults with disabilities how to ride and care for horses, and has interned with Alternatives for Children, teaching general music to a class of Pre-Kindergarten aged students with varying degrees of autism.
Sarah currently works as a Client Support Specialist with Ticketmaster, and has also garnered a stellar reputation in arts administration and venue management. Sarah has worked at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn NY , The Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, The Orchestra of St. Luke's, Bay Street Theater, and the InterSchool Orchestras of New York. Sarah is an accomplished horseback rider, who has competed on the A-rated hunter/jumper circuit, as well trained and coached junior and amateur riders. When not playing the clarinet or wrangling horses, Sarah enjoys traveling, bike riding, spending time outdoors, and most of all being a mom. She lives on eastern Long Island with her husband Michael, their daughter June, and their pets.
Sarah’s principal clarinet instructors include Alan Kay, Michael Galván, and Luigi Magistrelli, with additional instruction from Larry Combs, Jonathan Cohler, Gregory Oakes, Robert Spring, and Ricardo Morales.
